From PAYD to PriPAYD (Privacy Friendly Pay-As-You-Drive)
But what exactly is PriPAYD ? Basically, it’s a much less intrusive form of PAYD that aggregates all a vehicle’s data directly inside the electronic unit. Belgium is already exploring this idea.
A study on this subject has recently been revealed in a report done by TRONCOSO C., DANEZIS G., KOSTA E. & PRENEEL B. (Faculty of Law of the K.U. Leuven, Belgium), made public on October 29, 2007 and entitled "PriPAYD: Privacy Friendly Pay-As-You-Drive Insurance, In Workshop on Privacy in the Electronic Society 2007" (WPES'07, Alexandria, Virginia, USA).
This study shows that there is a very easy way to protect driver privacy while using a PAYD system:
it’s simply a question of calculating the insurance premium directly inside the onboard electronic unit and then transmitting only aggregate data to the insurance companies. To do so, it is necessary to have a database of road maps embedded inside the on-board electronic unit.
This process guarantees complete privacy protection since, in this case, it’s not necessary to transfer any raw data outside the vehicle. This is what the authors of the report refer to as "PriPAYD: Privacy Friendly Pay-As-You-Drive".
France hasn’t been lingering far behind either ; the French PriPAYD solution has been around since 2001 and it’s called e-bonus®.
